Overview
There are three options for adding a bibliographic record (bib) to a catalog:
- Import a single bib from a resource through the Import a MARC Bib function.
- Find a bib from a web resource, such as:
- Library of Congress (LC)
- National Library of Medicine (NLM)
- OCLC
- MARCIVE
- others
- Save it on your workstation.
- In CyberTools use Main Menu->Cataloging->Import a MARC Bib File.
LC, NLM, OCLC, and MARCIVE all have different methods and interfaces for
selecting the MARC bibliographic record(s) and saving the MARC bib file on
your workstation.
- Import multiple bibs and establish items using function Interactive Z39.50 MARC Bib Import.
- From the Main Menu->Cataloging->Interactive Z39.50 MARC Bib Import.
- Fill in several mandatory fields, including an Item Location, select a Z39.50 Server from the dropdown menu and [Import Bibs].
- Create the bib via function Original Cataloging.
- From the Main Menu->Cataloging->Original Cataloging.
- Use the Brief Bib Editor, fill in the necessary fields to create a MARC bib record.
- Or, use the MARC Editor to establish MARC tags, indicators, fields, and subfields to create a MARC bib record.
This Quick Tour will show you how to import a bib from the Library of Congress web site (i.e., the above Option 1). The process for importing from NLM is virtually identical to LC. OCLC and MARCIVE users should be familiar with receiving files from these sources. Options 2 and 3 are not explained in this tutorial.
