Overview to Interactive Z39.50 MARC Bib Import

The function [Interactive Z39.50 MARC Bib Import] imports multiple bibliographic records from a target catalog such as the Library of Congress or the National Library of Medicine. In order to use this feature in CyberTools, the target catalog must provide a Z39.50 server.

This function also attaches items to the bib so that all copy, volume, bar code, and location information can be attached to the imported bibs.

If a library has the CyberTools Z39.50 Client/Server enabled, then function [Interactive Z39.50 MARC Bib Import] allows the cataloger to type in a control number (e.g., ISBN, ISSN, or LCCN) to be queried at a specified Z39.50 server (e.g., the Library of Congress).

The Interactive Z39.50 Import window is the fastest and easiest way to populate a catalog with bibliographic data. Here are some sources using Z39.50 technology:

All source catalogs have different methods and interfaces for selecting the MARC bibliographic records, importing them into a catalog, and delivering those bibs in a file to the cataloger. All methods produce a MARC bib file in standard format, which can be loaded by CyberTools into your catalog.

This Quick Tour will show you the steps to import bibs from the Library of Congress. The process for importing from the National Library of Medicine is virtually identical to LC. The goal is to transfer the MARC records to the cataloger’s workstation and attach item(s) so they can be searched within the CyberTools system.
