2.71.1 Field 1 Function Keys
2.71.2 Field 2 Patron Class:
7 characters, mandatory, tab stop
Purpose: To specify a Patron Class by creating or editing its name.
Format: It is any valid text. The Text must be unique. A Class may not be changed if it is in use. A Class may be removed by pressing the Remove Occurrence function key noted at the bottom of the window (only if the Class is not in use).
Discussion:
This function enables you to create and to maintain patron
classes which are used to generate statistical reports on usage
and to control circulation policy. The list of patron classes
serves as an authority for the patron edit function. The codes
for the patron classes are established by your library before the
circulation module is live. These codes must be six characters
long and have a left-to right hierarchy, the general to the
specific. For example, at one academic library, this pattern is
used for the patron classes:
CLASS: FMEDPD F = FACULTY
MED = SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
PD = DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRICS
SNUR97 S = STUDENT
NUR = SCHOOL OF NURSING
97 = CLASS OF 1997
Note that in these classes a 1-3-2 arrangement is used, where 1 equals the patron's status at the University, 3 equals the patron's school, and 2 equals the patron's specific department or class. Your library can create any alpha-numeric arrangement for the patron class codes, but the arrangement must be consistent throughout all the codes in order to generate accurate statistics with them.
